Library Policy: Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary Loans

If you are a student, faculty member, or staff member of Georgia Highlands College and there is a book or article that you cannot access through GALILEO or GIL-Express, you may request the item through Interlibrary Loan:

Please be sure to fill out the form as completely as possible so that it can be processed for you quickly.

If you are not a student, faculty member, or staff member of Georgia Highlands College, you must make an interlibrary loan request through your home institution or local public library.

Information to Keep in Mind Concerning Interlibrary Loan Requests:

  • When a request is made, it may take anywhere from 5-7 business days before the item requested arrives.
  • Occasionally, a lending library may impose a lending fee. Indicate on the request form with a simple “Yes” of “No’ response, if you are willing to pay the lending fees.  Lending fees may range from $5.00-$50.00.
  • Articles tend to reach the library much faster than books because they are delivered electronically.
  • Most libraries are willing to lend books that are at least a year old but may not lend more recently published books.
  • Most libraries will not loan reference books, rare books, videos, audiotapes, DVDs, etc.
  • Requests may not be placed for reserve materials.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is "not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
