ENGL 1102- Wall (Cartersville) - Fall 2025

Assignment Guidelines

Paper #1

Directions:

Choose two stories from our textbook between which you can prove a connection that is not immediately obvious to most readers. Your thesis must clearly identify what element of fiction or literary technique is used effectively in both stories despite differences between plot and between the authors' gender, time period, etc.

-The whole essay must be literary analysis with no plot summary.

-You will need two secondary sources that are scholarly as well as your primary source, and all three must be listed on your Works Cited page in alphabetical order by last name.

-All direct quotes from your articles or even from your story should be blended in to your sentence and end with MLA parenthetical citations. Introduce all quotes with your own words.

-Organize your essay in a mature way and keep going back and forth between your two stories under each subcategory. If you can't think of a more creative way to break down your paper into distinct body paragraphs or sections, use the beginning, middle, and end of the stories to avoid writing half the paper on one story and half on the other.

Paper #2

Directions:

Choose your favorite short story out of our textbook. Then find two more stories by that author outside the textbook and argue a connection between all three. This time you can safely say that the pattern you find across all three stories is not only used well, but that this dimension is also characteristic of the author.

-Organize your essay in the same way as the first paragraph rather than one at a time by discussing all three stories in each

-You may discuss the author's biographical information only if relevant to your thesis.

-At least four secondary sources are required in addition to your three primary sources.

-Follow the other directions from the first paper as well.
