TIME MANAGEMENT

Welcome to Module 3 - Time Management! During this module, we'll be talking about how you manage your time. One of the greatest challenges for college students is learning how to manage their time wisely. Many Georgia Highlands students  work long hours and have children, which makes managing their time twice the challenge. This module will provide tips and skills on how to manage your time effectively and it  may just be the most important skill you learn.

Step 5: Journal Entry #3

A big goal in FCST 1010 is reflection. As a college student it's not only important to learn and do well in your classes - you must also learn to reflect on your college experience and the new attitudes, knowledge, and skills that you are gaining. Taking time to step back and think about experience will not only give you a richer experience but will also help you learn and apply knowledge. Reflection is basically the opposite of cramming for a test - it actually helps you remember and use information for a longer amount of time (hopefully a lifetime!). A great way to foster reflection is by journaling.

Watch the video How to Manage Your Time Better, only from the beginning to the 2:00 mark! Follow the directions in the video for tracking your time! You only need to keep track of your time for one day.

  • How much time did you blow?
  • What were your biggest time wasters (be honest...we ALL have time wasters)
  • The journal question is "How do you feel about the time you wasted?"
  • Please respond to at least 3 students in order to receive full credit for the assignment.

Write at least 200 words and respond to 3 students with each response at least 100 words.

Step 6: Time Mangagment Survival TIps!

Step 8: How to get your time back!!!

Step 9: Class activity - Case Study

Divide into groups of 4 students. Read the case study scenario below. Using the time management tips you have learned, how would you help this student better manage his time? Please be prepared to share your time management plan with the class.

Time Management Scenario

Tim is an 18 year-old student who just started his senior year of high school. He will graduate from high school this spring. He’s been working at an auto body shop and really likes the work. He’s decided to go to a technical school after graduating to learn the trade and open his own garage someday. His boss really likes him and wants him to work about 20 hours per week.

Tim lives in an apartment with his mom and two younger sisters. The family manages the apartment building so Tim has to devote 10 hours per week to things like cleaning hallways and fixing leaking faucets.

It’s always been tough for Tim to organize his time and prioritize what to do when. It is now December and the first semester of school is almost over. Tim is overwhelmed and worried that his grades are slipping so much that he might not graduate on time. He’s come to you for advice on how to manage his life.

Tim tells you his boss at the body shop can be somewhat flexible with his work hours because he doesn’t want to lose his best worker. He thinks he needs to study about 10 hours during the week and about 6 hours on the weekend. He also has a standing date with his girlfriend every Saturday night.

How can Tim organize his time and keep balance in his life? Use the Weekly Commitment Calendar to help Tim take charge of his time.

Step 10: Challenge 3 (Tilted)

Challenge 3: Where Does The Time Go?

Related Learning Objectives
Students will identify specific time management strategies from the content covered in the module.

Students will create a plan to improve their own time management skills using the strategies covered in the module.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how to better manage your time. If you’re like most college students (and most people in general), you probably feel that you just don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done. From school to work, hobbies to home life, we live busy lives packed with activities. This assignment will help you prioritize your time by asking you to identify specific strategies, detail how you will use those strategies, and explain why you chose those strategies.

Task

For this assignment, you will use the information gathered for Journal Entry #3 to write an essay that proposes solving your time management problem. You reflected on your “time wasters” in Journal Entry #3; now it is time to formulate a plan to use your time more wisely in the future.

Based on the time management strategies you have learned in this module, please formulate a "plan of action" on how you will better manage your time in the future in order to become a successful college student. Write an essay (min. 500 words) which accomplishes the following: introduces us to the problem, offers strategies and a plan for how you will use those strategies to solve the problem, and predicts the impact of those changes on your life.

Your introduction should acknowledge the problem (your “time wasters” from Journal #3) and how that problem has affected your life so far.

Each body paragraph has three primary elements, so pay attention to each of them. First, you will identify a specific strategy to use and cite that strategy appropriately per MLA style. Second, you will explain how you will use this strategy; be specific in your explanation. Third, you will explain why you chose this strategy.

Your conclusion should indicate how you expect these changes to impact your life.

Additionally, you should format the document per MLA style.

Step 11: Going Further

In your Challenge Essay Assignment this week you had to take a close look at how you spend your time. In this Going Further Assignment, you need to take the information you collected at put it into an Excel File. You should have two columns, Activity and Minutes. Be sure that your total minutes adds up to 1440, the number of minutes in 24 hours.

 Be CREATIVE!

Once you have put all the data into the Excel file, create a Pie Chart of the information.

Upload the Excel file to the Assignment Submission folder.
