Michelle Abbott, Instructor

Susanna Smith, Librarian

Fall 2023

Purpose

This guide will walk you through two assignments for your course. The first will cover how to evaluate web-based sources. The second will cover how to build a keywords search and use Galileo to locate sources for your Worthy Charity essay.

Skills

The skills you will practice are:

  1. Articulate the attributes of internet search results.
  2. Articulate the attributes of resources located in library databases.
  3. Determine if a source is appropriate for the intended use.
  4. Build an effective search strategy including determining keywords.

Knowledge

The skills necessary to locate and evaluate sources are transferable to other research you will do in the future, in a library or work setting, or when using a general web browser like Google.

Tasks

STEP 1:

Start with a Source Evaluation refresher. You should have completed the Source Evaluation module, and this refresher gives you a specific tool (the 5Ws) to use as you look at both web and Galileo sources!

STEP 2:

Under the "Worthy Charity Essay" page, take a look at the information on the Google v Galileo tab. It's important to know which one to use when you're looking for different kinds of information.

STEP 3:

Take a look at the information on the Search Strategies tab - the basic building block for doing good research. We will talk about this in our session, so this page is here for you to refer to whenever you need it.

STEP 4:

Next take a look at the Web Resources tab. This will help you find web-based information about your specific charity.

STEP 5:

Finally, use one of the databases on the Galileo Resources tab to search for information about the issue or focus of your charity. You might not find articles about your specific charity, so choose those issues as your keywords instead of the charity name.

STEP 6:

Take the Quick Quiz!

Criteria

The work you do based on the content of this library guide and information literacy instruction will be evaluated as part of your research project. Locating excellent sources will help you write an excellent paper!
