How to Use This Guide

This information literacy content is broken up into four sessions, each with its own introduction page, and sub-pages with content for that session. I recommend you work through each session, and refer back to the content as you progress through the class! Some of this may be content you've heard before, which is great! You can use the information as a review or when needed after you begin your research.

An Overview of the Sessions

• Session 1: The research process, plus an introduction to Galileo and Gil-Find, our book catalog
• Session 2: Types of sources, using keywords, and taking advantage of database tools like limiters
• Session 3: Using Sources when paraphrasing and quoting, and developing in-text citations
• Session 4: A review of APA citations and the reference list

Information Literacy Objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Articulate the attributes of resources located in library database.
2. Articulate the attributes of internet search results.
3. Search the library catalog in order to locate an appropriate resource.
4. Differentiate between types of source materials (e.g., books, journal articles, websites, newspapers).
5. Build an effective search strategy including determining keywords.
6. Refine and narrow searches using built-in database limiters.

7. Cite sources correctly in the appropriate documentation style.
