English 1101: Brent Schnee

Course Description: English 1101 is a composition course focusing on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation, including introductory use of a variety of research skills.

Prerequisites:

One of the following - (1) appropriate placement test scores or (2) satisfactory completion of required Developmental English classes.

Required Texts:
-Connelly, Mark and Joseph Trimmer. Sundance Choice. Mason: Cengage, 2008.
-The Harbrace Handbook (17th edition) ed. Cheryl Glenn et al. Boston: Wadsworth, 2007.
*Though not required, students are encouraged to maintain a journal throughout the semester for notes and brainstorming.

NOTE: You are required to have at least 2 sources for your works cited page.

Course Requirements:

You will complete approximately seven writing assignments during the semester, most of which will be full essays using a range of rhetorical strategies. Revisions will be required on some assignments.  In addition to the main writing assignments, you will be required to read and study assignments from the textbooks, complete a variety of grammar and writing exercises, and take several grammar quizzes.  You will also undergo library orientations or online tutorials to learn how to do basic research.
