HIST 2154 - Minorities in US History (OER): Module 7: Contemporary Issues since 1970

This guide is designed to share teaching resources and OER materials for HIST 2154: MInorities in US History, created under an ALG Continuous Improvement Grant

Module Overview

This module is designed to introduce students to the history of Native Americans, African Americans, Latinx Americans, and Asian Americans, and women during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Module Outcomes

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Analyze the impact of resurgent conservatism in the late 20th century on the rights and lives of minorities
  • Identify some of the contemporary issues facing Native Americans, African Americans, women, Latinx Americans, and Asian Americans.
  • Explore the current strategies being used to address these issues and identify both continuity and change with strategies of the past
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of using sources intended to explain a contemporary issue, such as commentaries, editorials, and videos, as primary sources to understand and contextualize the world in which we live
  • Understand the historical origins of contemporary issues facing minority/subordinate groups in America today.

Native American Voices 

  • Based on the source set provided here, what are some of the contemporary issues facing Native Americans? 
  •  What strategies are suggested to combat or resolve these issues?  What do you suggest as a strategy and what can you personally do to help spotlight the voices of Native American Indians in an accurate and helpful manner? 
  •  What are the strengths and weaknesses of using secondary sources such as these examples?  How well do you think these examples represent general contemporary issues?

African American Voices

  • What are some of the strategies being suggested and/or strategies being utilized to address those issues? Items to consider: 
    • What does Henry Louis Gates, Jr. say are the best and worst of times and what does he propose African Americans should and should not do?  
    • How does Bryan Stevenson believe his museum project is key to racial reconciliation?  What can be done to improve health care?  
    • What are some conclusions about the power of online services such as Twitter and social movements?)

Women’s Voices 

  • Based on the source set provided here, what are some of the contemporary issues facing women in America?   
  • What are some of the strategies being suggested and/or strategies being utilized? Items to consider:
    • How did women’s and African American interests and strategies align with recent events?  
    • How are politics and legislation changing for women? What are the primary concerns and issues for women and what still needs to be done? 
    • How are women continuing to be sexualized in the media (see Kilbourne video and discuss specific examples and negative consequences)?  
  • Compare the report of female athletes and events in the recent (2021) summer Olympics concerning women’s uniforms
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of using secondary sources such as these examples?  How well do you think these examples represent general contemporary issues?

  • What are the various ways Covid-19 affected Asian Americans?  Ex. Are there generational differences in Asian American dreams and experiences?
