HIST 2154 - Minorities in US History (OER): Summative Assessments

This guide is designed to share teaching resources and OER materials for HIST 2154: MInorities in US History, created under an ALG Continuous Improvement Grant

Final Project: Essay

Summative Assessment Description

In this final assessment, students are asked to use primary and secondary sources (some reliable tertiary sources are allowed for context) to make a historical argument.

  • Step 1: Students will begin the semester by choosing a topic (minority/subordinate group and theme). This is an important step because it will inform their primary source selections for the overall essay.
  • Step 2: Within each module, they are asked to complete a primary source analysis for a document pertaining to their topic selection
  • Step 3: For the midterm assessment, students will be submitting an annotated bibliography of secondary/tertiary sources to help them contextualize and corroborate their analysis of the primary sources.
  • Step 4: For the final assessment, they will be submitting a 5-6 page essay that is the culmination of their work.

Final Project: Digging Deeper with Resources

Summative Assessment Description

In this summative assessment, students are asked to evaluate a variety of kinds of primary sources and primary source collections available digitally. They then reflect back on the experience and draw conclusions about how historians work, how they know about the past, the importance of having a variety of voices in the historical narrative, and why those voices aren't always present.

Can be done in conjunction with the Module 4/Midterm Activity.
