Title IX Literature Search

Often times when we want to learn more about a topic, or when we need to complete an assignment dealing with that topic, we will need to do some research. The library provides great resources to help you develop the information literacy skills necessary to separate the good information from the bad. This exercise will require you to search and collect specific types of information and then create the citations that would be necessary if they are used to complete an assignment. You will search the Web and/or Galileo for two articles and create works cited citations for them using APA (American Psychological Association) formatting.

Article 1: Popular Media Article (Newspaper, Magazine, or Reputable Website; NO blogs or message boards)

  • The article should cover a Title IX topic related to sports. It cannot be an article someone else has already chosen (more on that below).
  • Less than 5 years old
  • Print off the first page of the article to turn in next week
  • Create an APA works cited citation. You will type this into the D2L Discussion labeled Title IX Articles. In the Subject box you should put the title of the article. Your citation will go into the text box for that discussion. Make sure you read through the Subject titles BEFORE you start yours. If someone else has already used your article, you must choose a new one.

Article 2: Peer-Reviewed Journal Article

  • The article should cover a Title IX topic (it does not have to be limited to sports). It cannot be an article someone else has already chosen (more on that below).
  • You must have immediate access to the COMPLETE article. Galileo provides access to a large number of abstracts which do not include immediate access to the article. These will not count for this exercise.

BONUS OPPORTUNITY

  • Read through your classmates’ APA citations. If you find a mistake in their formatting or spelling, correct it in a reply to that post.
  • If your corrected APA citation is COMPLETELY accurate, you will get an extra 5 points added to your grade. Limit ONE correction per student.
  • If your correction is incorrect, you do not get any points but it also does not count against you.
