APA Tips

Collect Everything You Need First!

If you can't identify these parts, you won't be able to catch mistakes in automatic citation generators.
  • Author(s) or editors - If it's a website with no author, is there a username or organization (ex: CDC)?
  • Title - Format tip: lower caps except for proper names. Don't Capitalize All The Words. 
  • Date -  If a website, look for a posted date or last updated. Use (n.d.) if no date.
  • Journal Name - Format tipCapitalize and Italicize Journal Name
    • You also need, Volume, Issue, and a doi or persistent link. 
    • Volume (Issue) or 33(4). Note that volume is italicized.

  • Page numbers - if available
  • If Print Book - Location: Publisher
  • If eBook - link or permalink (if in the library catalog)
