HIST 2112: Assignment

Assignment

Topic Choices

Please choose one of these topics to write on, based off your reading of Lynn Dumenil’s American Working Women in World War II and at least one peer-reviewed secondary source obtained through JSTOR:

1. Did the experience of women working and fighting during World War II reinforce stereotypes about women, or challenge them? Explain your answer.

2. What kinds of extra challenges did women of color face when working and fighting during World War II? Why?

3. How and why did American women’s experiences during World War II lead to important changes in women’s rights after the war?

4. Compare and contrast two different reasons why American women chose to work or fight during the war. Explain your answer.

Steps in the Assignment

The dropboxes for all steps of the assignment will be available under the “Take-Home Essay” module on D2L.

All steps must be uploaded as .doc, .docx, or .rtf documents – do not use .pdf.

Late submissions for the outline and essay will be docked by 10% per calendar day, starting at 12:01AM. Late submissions for the second draft will not be accepted. Late submissions of the optional second draft will not be accepted. Any late penalties on the original paper submission will also apply if you submit a second draft. If you receive a penalty for academic dishonesty on the original paper submission, you will not have the opportunity to submit a second draft.

Outline: Due on D2L, Wednesday, July 14 at 11:59PM

You will submit a short document in which you lay out which question you are choosing to answer, what your thesis statement will be, which (at least) three sources from the Dumenil book you will use, and which peer-reviewed secondary source obtained through JSTOR that you plan on using. You may change these between the outline and the paper – and indeed, I might give you feedback encouraging to do so – but this is to get you thinking about how to structure your paper.

Paper: Due on D2L, Friday, July 23 at 11:59 PM

Your paper will be formatted following the Chicago Manual of Style format. Your paper will need to be between 900 and 1100 words long, with your thesis statement underlined somewhere in your introduction. You will need to use at least three primary source documents from the Dumenil text and at least one peer-reviewed secondary source obtained through JSTOR.

Optional Second Draft: Due on D2L, Friday, July 30 at 11:59PM

You may submit a final draft which you will have rewritten taking my feedback into account. If so, I will average the grades of your two submissions to determine your final grade on the paper.
