ENGL 1102 - Abbott (Online) - Summer 2020

Research Essay

Research Essay

Purpose: Research papers are a very common college assignment, so success in college requires you to have the skills to research, prepare, write, and revise a research paper. This is a common college assignment because nearly every profession requires research and writing skills of some sort.

Topic:  History is written by the victors, so when a "despot" is overthrown, their history is often written by their successors, and it is rarely flattering. In your 5-6 page Research Paper, you will move beyond general impressions of your chosen despot*. While genocide and other acts of terror cannot be overlooked or argued away, it will be your task to find and explain what was positive about his time in power, and if possible, shed light on the motivations behind his most dastardly deeds. Your Research Paper should shift the world's perspective of your chosen despot from 100% evil to evil-with-good-intentions, or perhaps even a little more positive than that.

*Despot choices/assignments were made at the start of the semester.
