ACRL Framework for Information Literacy

Our Objectives are tied to the Association of Colleges and Research Library's Framework for Information Literacy. We believe the core concepts of the Framework are integral to developing the information literate student, and the Framework allows us to create a cohesive curriculum for information literacy that can be used across the disciplines.

Information Literacy Objectives

 

1) Determine the information need

FRAMEWORK: RESEARCH AS INQUIRY

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize the different characteristics of popular and scholarly sources.
  2. Recognize the different characteristics of primary and secondary sources.

 

2) Access the information effectively and efficiently

FRAMEWORK: SEARCHING AS A STRATEGIC EXPLORATION

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic GALILEO functions (eg: results list, email, cite tool)
  2. Build an effective search strategy including determining keywords.
  3. Search the library catalog in order to locate an appropriate resource
  4. Identify appropriate library databases for specific research needs.
  5. Refine and narrow searches using built-in database limiters.

 

3) Identify the purpose and audience of potential sources

FRAMEWORK: INFORMATION CREATION AS A PROCESS

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between types of source materials (e.g., books, journal articles, websites, newspapers).
  2. Identify appropriate resources for their research needs.
  3. Define the peer review process.

 

4) Evaluate information and its sources critically

FRAMEWORK: AUTHORITY IS CONSTRUCTED AND CONTEXTUAL

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Identify qualities that help determine currency, relevance, accuracy, and purpose in a source.
  2. Defend source credibility using indicators of authority.
  3. Assess content critically and with an awareness of source and personal biases.

 

5) Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

FRAMEWORK: SCHOLARSHIP AS CONVERSATION

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Monitor gathered information and assess gaps for research.
  2. Identify differing viewpoints encountered in the source.

 

6) Access and use information ethically and legally.

FRAMEWORK: INFORMATION HAS VALUE

Lesson Objectives: Upon completion of information literacy instruction, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize different types of plagiarism and how to avoid them.
  2. Cite sources correctly in the appropriate documentation style.
  3. Recognize that personal information can be collected, used, and sold online.
