Library Guide Helpful Tips!

You'll be using GALILEO resources for your project, and there are several useful pages on this guide.

STEP 1:

Scholarly vs. Popular Sources: Read over the information on Scholarly and popular sources. As you do history research, it's important to know the difference.

STEP 2:

Using Galileo: Refresh your knowledge on doing a basic Galileo search. This is your gateway to library resources.

STEP 3:

Below the Galileo information, you'll see information on three important search skills:

  1. Searching with Keywords: Everyone should be able to build a good keyword search. Strong keywords make strong searches!
  2. Searching with Boolean: Despite its spooky sounding name, this is a simple way to take your keyword search to the next level.
  3. Searching with Limiters/Filters: After you've mastered Boolean searching with your keywords, use the database limiters to drill down and find perfect sources.

STEP 4:

Subject Databases: Because you're doing historical research, take a look at this information on subject-specific databases. Using a subject database will eliminate many irrelevant sources, and you can also use all the great things you learned in Step 3!
