Objectives

Purpose

This guide will walk you through two tasks: an introduction to subject databases and the Annotated Bibliography assignment.  It also includes refresher information on using Galileo and advanced search tools.

Skills

The skills you will practice are:

  1. Identifying appropriate databases for subject-specific research needs.
  2. Refining and narrowing searches using built-in database limiters.

Knowledge

The skills necessary to locate and evaluate sources are transferable to other research you will do in the future, in a library or work setting, or when using a general web browser like Google.

Library Guide Helpful Tips!

Tasks

PART 1: Using Galileo

This set of tabs will provide refreshers on Galileo, keyword searching, and using filters. Make sure you review this information carefully before the online library session. You will need it to complete the in-class assignment effectively.

PART 2: Subject Databases

You have likely done basic research using the main Galileo search, but you may not be familiar with subject databases. This task will occur during the online library session, where you will explore a common research question in groups and share your results at the end.

PART 3: Annotated Bibliography

After you gain some experience using literary databases, you will create an annotated bibliography based on the instructions provided by Ms. Abbott.

Criteria

Criteria

The work you do based on the content of this library guide and information literacy instruction will be evaluated as part of your research project. Locating excellent sources will help you write an excellent paper!
