ESSAY ASSIGNMENT 5

The fifth essay is an argument/persuasion essay, similar to the ones we have read for class. The essay format is as follows:

• Name, CRN#, Assignment, due date, and instructor name in the upper right-hand corner
• 12 pt font, Times New Roman, double spaced (fonts other than Times New Roman will now count against you)
• Title (the lack of a title will now count against you)
• 750 words minimum
• Essays must be submitted in hard copy (printed) at the beginning of class. Do NOT e-mail it to me and expect me to print it for you!
• You are required to have at least two (2) sources for your works cited page.
• Due date is Tuesday, April 11^th

The goal of this essay is to argue or persuade a point of view on a topic of your choosing. Consider the pieces we read for class: In Praise of the F Word, and Uncle Sam and Aunt Samantha. The topic does not have to be controversial or even well-known, but thorough, intelligent discussion is expected.

• Be careful of your chosen topic. Broad topics such as capital punishment, gun control, and abortion are allowed, but keep in mind this is an argument essay, and you will have to address every aspect of your topic.
• Don’t forget about the strategies for dealing with hostile readers. If there are holes in your argument, then they will count against you!
• Keep in mind your audience. What kind of appeal will best serve your argument?
• Be careful of generalized statements. This is an argument paper, backed up by fact. Incorrect information, unfounded assumptions, and generalizations will hurt your paper and damage your credibility as a writer.

Have a rough draft prepared and printed out for peer review on Wednesday, April 6^th.

*NOTE: Grading will be stricter on this essay and all following essays. A “U” for any criteria on the rubric will result in a 0 (zero) for the respective category: Structure, Style, Development, or Mechanics. Time to step up the proofreading!
