Information Literacy and Research

Information competency or information literacy is the ability to recognize what type of information is needed, how to locate that information and evaluate it and then, use the information effectively.

 

Information literacy skills are required for research.

  1. Think critically about the information you have located in books, articles or websites
  2. Determine the most important information from your research
  3. Preparing your research documentation
  4. Write your paper

How to Evaluate Materials

Remember the following criteria as you evaluate your sources:

        CARS -

C = Credibility

      Authorship/Editor

      Peer review

      Publisher, if no author

A = Accuracy

      Audience

      Currency, last update

      Error free

      Comprehensive

      How does it compare to other sources

R = Reasonableness

      Objectivity/Bias

      Agendas

S = Support

      References

      Corroboration

      Documentation

For electronic sources:

      URL endings, such as .com, .edu., gov., .org

      Technical requirements

      Ease of Navigation

      Links
