The Assignment

HIST 2111 Research Project 2013

Research Project:  Due by Monday April 29th by the beginning of class!

You must have your topic approved by me first.  Type up all of the following in ONE Word document and bring Hard Copy to class on due date AND submit to www.turnitin.com.  Remember, all citations MUST follow the Rampolla Guide.

I.  TOPIC:  Early American Biography or Event

You are to choose one person (Sam Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Phillis Wheatley, Susan B. Anthony, Robert E. Lee, etc.) closely associated with one of the following main issues/events of early American History to research further:  American Revolution, Native Americans (during our course time frame), Slavery, Women’s rights (during our course time frame), or the Civil War.  OR- you may choose one of those issues/events to study and research further (as an issue/event overall).  Note: you should look over the research requirements before you decide on your chosen person/event in history and make sure your choice and available research is a good fit.  You will be producing a research paper proposal including an annotated bibliography and proposal summary.  You will be using primary and secondary sources.

II.  GUIDELINES:

A.  Research:

1.  You must use credible secondary AND primary resources.  Refer to the Rampolla guide for further instructions on the differences (and look at the D2L weblink for Library Research Help).

2.  You must use AT LEAST (so the minimum):

·        2 (Secondary Source) articles from JSTOR (NOT a book review)

·        1 (Secondary Source) book (BUT-other than the text)

·        1 (Secondary Source) credible, college level website

·        2 Primary Sources (ex. memoirs/speeches/books he or she wrote, etc.)

B.  Paper Proposal:  (Note: remember to look over the sample student paper in D2L)

1.  Annotated Bibliography

·        Read about annotated bibliographies in the Rampolla Guide.

·        Type up an Annotated Bibliography using your source choices.  Make sure you include a good, thorough summary in your OWN words.  You simply properly cite your source then type up the summary under that citation…then type the next citation and its summary…then the next and so on. Single space…but double space between the citation and the summary.  Remember to look over the Rampolla explanation and examples.  You MUST use the citations according to the Rampolla guide (she shrunk down the traditional Chicago Style Manual which Turabian also shrunk a little…this is the style format that historians use so we are using this style format as well).

2.  Proposal Summary:  In your OWN words…

·        Type up a 1-3 paragraph summary about who your chosen person (or event) is/was based on your research and why you chose him/her as an example of someone that had a profound effect on you and what we have learned about early American History this semester.

·        Follow that with a 1-3 paragraph summary about why you chose the sources you did (out of all the available sources).  Add any comments about which type of sources were best for which type of information etc.

·        Finish with a 1-3 paragraph summary about what your thesis and paper organization would be IF you were actually writing a full research paper about your chosen person in history OR event/movement (based on your research).  Include what further research you would need to find in order to help accomplish your research paper goals (if you were writing a full length paper).

C.  Practical Document Details:

               1.  No Cover Page

               2.  Document Details (All in ONE Word Document):

o   The paper proposal (which includes the annotated bibliography AND proposal summary) must be typed up in ONE Word Document.

o   You should have in the upper left corner of the first page (single spaced): YOUR name, 2111 Research Project on __________, Spring 2013 (do NOT include my name).

o   First, type up your Annotated Bibliography (Type/center a title first= Annotated Bibliography).  You may single space your annotated bibliography (but double space between the citations and the annotations).

o   Second, type up your Paper Proposal Summary (Type/center a title first= Paper Proposal Summary).  You may single space your paragraphs (but double space between paragraphs).

o   Make sure you have included page numbers in your paper.
