The Abc's of APA

The ABC’s of APA

The Basics:

  • 12 pt Times New Roman font
  • 1” margins on all sides of the paper (This is the default setting for Microsoft Word)
  • Double Space
  • Every page of the paper should have a page header consisting of the title of the paper ALL IN CAPS.
  • There are 4 sections to an APA style paper: Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and References.

Title Page:

  • Header example: Running head: TITLE OF THE PAPER
  • The page header is set to the top left of the page
  • Pages should be numbered at the top right of the page, starting with the title page as page 1
  • In the upper half of the page include the following information centered: Paper title, Author’s name, and Institutional affiliation
  • Example:

Title of the Paper

Mark Gatesman

Georgia Highlands College

Abstract

  • Starting with the abstract and on every page following your header will drop the words “Running head” and will simply list the title in ALL CAPS.
  • At the top of the page, center the word Abstract.
  • An abstract is a 150-250 word, single paragraph summary of your paper.
  • Do not indent your abstract.
  • At the bottom of your abstract you may inlcude a list of keywords for your paper. To do this indent the next line after your abstract and type the word Keywords: (in italics) and list your keywords.
  • Example: Keywords: stuff, things, people, places, ideas

Main Body

  • Type your paper here, like you normally would.
  • Remember to keep your header and page numbers
  • Since you have a Title Page, you DO NOT put your name, the paper title, or any other information besides the page number and header at the top of the first page of the body of your paper.

References

  • All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be indented one-half inch from the left margin. This is called hanging indentation.
  • Authors' names are inverted (last name first); give the last name and initials for all authors of a particular work for up to and including seven authors. If the work has more than seven authors, list the first six authors and then use ellipses after the sixth author's name. After the ellipses, list the last author's name of the work.
  • Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work.
  • If you have more than one article by the same author, single-author references or multiple-author references with the exact same authors in the exact same order are listed in order by the year of publication, starting with the earliest.
  • Capitalize all major words in journal titles.
  • When referring to books, chapters, articles, or Web pages, capitalize only the first letter of the first word of a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and proper nouns. Do not capitalize the first letter of the second word in a hyphenated compound word.
  • Italicize titles of longer works such as books and journals.
  • Do not italicize, underline, or put quotes around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles or essays in edited collections
