COMM1100 Source Citation Activity

Opening: 30 minutes from librarian, providing a brief overview of the library resources. Discuss how to use Galileo (focus on LexisNexis, journal databases, videos on demand, etc), search for books.

5 minutes: Instructor presentation of activity.

“Today, you will be trying to answer two very important questions. Question 1: Is it physically possible to multitask? And, question 2: If you can multitask, does that mean you SHOULD do it? You will answer these questions by working with one other person, and by finding at least 2 sources that ‘prove’ your answers are correct.”

At this point, instructor divides class up into pairs. Assign each group a specific type of source to find: websites, newspapers/popular press magazines, books, or journals.

Stipulations:

Must answer YES or NO to each question

Must give at least 2 reasons why… and those reasons have to come from a source that you were assigned to research

Group work time: 30 minutes

Last 10 minutes: re-convene, begin discussion about what each group found; prepare them to discuss further at next class.
