IC LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT

IC stands for information competency, which is the ability to recognize what type of information is needed, locate that information, evaluate it and use it effectively.  Click here for more information

The Library IC exercise is given below.  Make sure that you read the questions closely, understand what is being asked and answer all parts of the question. Good Luck!!

IC ASSIGNMENT

The following questions are pulled from Chemistry, Geology, and Physics, so you may have to look through the different Research Guides, search GALILEO, and even use the Book Catalog (all of these links can be found on the GHC Library Home Page) to answer these.  Good Luck!

1. My physics professor wants me to read a particular peer-reviewed journal article on aviation and physics.  The article concerns "atmospheric turbulence," was published in 2009, and I think he saw it in GALILEO's Research Library database.  Anyway, I have to read the article and tell him what EDR means.

2. Does the GHC Library have the book, Chemistry of the f-block elements, by Helen C. Aspinall?  If GHC does not have it, which libraries in Georgia do have it?

3. Using the Science and Technology Collection database in GALILEO, find the article entitled, "Research and Development of Compact Neutron Sources based on Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion."  In the article, the research team discusses the reason why they were unable to perform Doppler shift measurements for the beam-injection mode at lower pressure.  What is the reason?

4. Using the National Science Digital Library database in GALILEO, perform a search using the term, "thermodynamics."  Find the diagram entitled "Separation of Isotopes by Method of Isothermal Effusion."  Why do the light particles collide the walls of the diagram 5 times more often than the heavy particles?

5. Using the Facts on File: Today's Science database in GALILEO, go to the Earth Science subject index and look for articles on the weather pattern known as El Nino.  Give an example of how to properly cite the article entitled, "El Nino Ready to Rear Its Ugly Head Again?" using the APA format.

6. I need to look for an article form the American Mathematical Monthly that was published in the year, 1914, entitled "A Note on Plane Kinematics."  What is the best GALILEO database that I can access for finding the article?  Secondly, who are the authors of the article?

7. How many libraries, world-wide, own a copy of Marginalia in Newtoni "Principia mathematica" (published in 1687)?

8. I have heard that the GHC Library has something called "Research Guides" on its home page, and that there is a subject link to Astronomy.  What is the name of the web site on the Astronomy page that deals with lunar information?  Secondly, in the section on "blue moons," what is the best known physical definition for a "blue moon?"

9. Does the GHC Library have a copy of A briefer history of time, by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow?  Secondly, what is the Call Number for this particular book?

10. Using the GALILEO database, A to Z Maps Online, find a Geology map of the United States, click on the area where the Snake River Plain is located, and give the name of the lava that flowed through this part of southern Idaho some 2,000 years ago.
