Communication

Step 1: Weekly Welcome and Checklist

Welcome to Module 9! In this module, we'll be talking about communication (verbal and non-verbal).You will never be a successful college student without communicating. You must communicate with professors and classmates. However, there is a right way and a wrong way. Hopefully, this module will point you toward the correct ways of communicating.

Due This Week:

  • Journal Entry #9 - Due before Thursday/Sunday at midnight
  • Challenge #9 - Due before Sunday at midnight
  • Going Further #9 - Due before Sunday at midnight
  • Content Quiz #9 - Due by Wednesday (Instructor's Choice - Quiz or In-class Assignments)

Step 2: Intro Video

Don't type an email like you text. :0)

Step 4: Don't be afraid to talk to your professors! Funny!!

Step 5: Weekly Journal

A big goal in FCST 1010 is reflection. As a college student it's not only important to learn and do well in your classes - you must also learn to reflect on your college experience and the new attitudes, knowledge, and skills that you are gaining. Taking time to step back and think about experience will not only give you a richer experience but will also help you learn and apply knowledge. Reflection is basically the opposite of cramming for a test - it actually helps you remember and use information for a longer amount of time (hopefully a lifetime!). A great way to foster reflection is by journaling.

Journal Entry #9 - Do you feel comfortable communicating with your professors? and communicating with classmates?

  •   If you answered yes, what is your secret?
  •   If you answered no, why don't you feel comfortable and what could you do differently?

Please complete this journal entry in D2L before Wednesday at midnight. Make sure you respond to 2 students.

Step 6: Communicating through Public Speaking

Step 7: Resources

Step 8: Watch this clip before Challenge 9!

Step 9: Weekly Challenge

Challenge 9How Can You Communicate With Your Professors?

If you’re new to college, you may not have much experience talking to educators. In high school many students see their teachers as unapproachable and often don’t talk to them at all. In college, this apprehension is often increased. After all, professors are over-educated, single-minded intellectuals who sleep in their offices and hate students, right? Wrong! Professors are actually a lot like you. They value learning, want to see you succeed, and have already been where you are now. In addition, they have families, social lives, hobbies, and values - and understand that “real life” sometimes conflicts with college.

 To complete this assignment:

1. Watch the fun clip from Mary Poppins above. Are Jane and Michael realistic about what they want from a Nanny? Are you realistic in what you want from a professor? Complete the following exercises:

      a. Watch the video clip.

      b. Write a 1/2 page description of the "perfect" professor. You don't need to be realistic...only write what you would "really" want from your professor. Would having the perfect professor make it easier when communicating with them? Have fun!

Step 10: Going Further

It is not uncommon for famous people to give famous speeches. But what is it about those speeches that make them famous? What it the topic they covered? Maybe it was location or time period it was given. Below you will find three famous speeches.

The first is by Winston Churchill when the term "Iron Curtain" is coined. Churchill was speaking to Westminster College when the beginning of the Cold War is declared.

The second is by President John F. Kennedy from the Berlin Wall on June 26, 1963. In this speech Kennedy distinguishes between the Free World and Communism.

The third is by President Ronald Reagan from the Brandenburg Gate of the Berlin Wall. In this speech Reagan puts for a challenge to President Gorbachev to put "tear down the Berlin Wall."

Now you have three examples of famous speeches. I want you to compare them.

Using the document below, please fill in the blanks regarding each speech. After you have filled in the blanks of the chart, using this information tell me why you think these speeches are famous. Your response needs to be a minimum of 150 words.
