  • What notetaking can do for your GPA.
  • How vital it is to both listen and take notes in order to be a successful college student.

Step 2: Listening and Taking Notes

Perfect example of "not" listening to a professor!

Step 3: Watch Video

Step 5: Weekly Journal

A big goal in FCST 1010 is reflection. As a college student it's not only important to learn and do well in your classes - you must also learn to reflect on your college experience and the new attitudes, knowledge, and skills that you are gaining. Taking time to step back and think about experience will not only give you a richer experience but will also help you learn and apply knowledge. Reflection is basically the opposite of cramming for a test - it actually helps you remember and use information for a longer amount of time (hopefully a lifetime!).A great way to foster reflection is by journaling. In FCST 1010 you'll be completeing a journal entry each week for Day 1 Homework.

Journal Entry #8 - Do you really listen in class?

  • Be honest in your response.
  • Does your mind race to other thoughts while your professor is speaking?
  • Are you an active listener by taking notes In class?
  • What could you "start" doing to be a better listener in class?

Step 6: Intro Prezi

Step 7: Note Taking Methods

Please review the following notetaking methods before completing Challenge 8!!!! Once you have examined all 5 methods, choose 2 methods you would like to use to take notes. Then proceed to Challenge 8 for directions!!!!

Mushroom Death Suit

Step 8: Challenge 8

Challenge 8: How Can You Optimize Your Note-Taking Skills? (40 pts)

Note-taking can be one of the most stressful parts of college. As a high school student, you may not have had to take notes very often - or at all. However, college is much more difficult than high school and your professors will expect you to actively listen in class and take notes. Although some professors don’t lecture, most still do and base their tests and other assignments largely off of what they say in class. Thus, it is imperative that you learn to take good notes early in your college career.

After examing the 5 note taking methods, please choose 2 (outline, web, T-Cornell, etc.)note taking methods and follow the steps below:

  1. Watch the first 3 minutes of the video below over "Mushroom Death Suit." Take notes using one of the note taking methods you selected. Then, switch to the other note taking system and watch the rest of the video as you take notes.
  2. After taking notes over the video in both methods, please answer these questions:
  • Which note taking systems did you choose? Why?
  • After taking notes, which one did you prefer? Why?
  • How could you successfully use this note taking system in a class for which you are currently enrolled?

Submit these questions into Challenge 8 D2L dropbox by Sunday at midnight!!!

Step 9: Going Further

Over the years researchers have discovered that doing puzzles is a way to "exercise" your brain. This is why video games like Brain Age and TV shows like Brain Games are so popular. By simply playing these games or watching this show you are actually making yourself a little smarter....really I promise.

The Alzheimer Association says this about the topic

Mental decline as you age appears to be largely due to altered connections among brain cells. But research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections. You could even generate new brain cells.

So having this information in hand here is your Going Further Assignment, complete the following:

    1. Go to Highlights Magazine What's Wrong Puzzle site.
    2. Take a screen shot of your completed puzzle and upload it to the Assignment folder
    3. Now tell me how you did...

      • Was any object tougher to find than another than another?
      • What was easy about it?

    4. Your answer should be a minimum of 150 words but no more than 300 words.
    5. Submit this to the Assignment folder.

***There will be two files submitted this week, both files must be submitted to get full credit.***
