So we use all these crazy terms and acronyms in the library, and it can be a little mystifying! Here's a quick-and-easy description of all the terms you might hear related to finding and obtaining BOOKS, and what they're referring to.
GIL |
Stands for GALILEO Interconnected Libraries. It is the name of the University System of Georgia's online catalog; also used to refer to your library account (where you can request and renew books, and check for fines). |
GIL-FIND | Refers to the search interface for finding only GHC books. |
GIL UNIVERSAL CATALOG |
The search interface which searches the catalogs of ALL University System of Georgia libraries. |
GIL EXPRESS |
The system with which you request books from other USG schools - a FREE service for all our students; books usually arrive within days. |
INTERCAMPUS LOAN |
Refers to requesting books from other GHC campuses; books arrive on Tuesdays and Thursdays. |
INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL) | A system with which you request books (as well as articles) from libraries outside of the USG; books take considerably longer to arrive, as they must go through snail mail. |

GALILEO |
A collection of databases provided by GHC and the University System of Georgia. |
DATABASE | A searchable electronic catalog or index which contains information about published items (journal articles, images, videos, and books); databases are accessed thru subscription ($$$) and contain material that may not be available for free on the world wide web. |
JOURNAL | A regularly published periodical containing articles, book reviews, and other material related to an academic discipline. |
ARTICLE | A single written document or literary work published in a journal, magazine, or newspaper. |
