You're probably used to the MLA and/or APA citation styles by now. Well here in the History department we use a completely different style, Chicago style (though you might also hear it referred to as Turabian). Just check out the examples and links to the left.
According to A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations 7th Edition:
Cite paintings, scupltures, photographs, and other artworks only in notes. Include the name of the artist, the titel of the artwork and date of its creation (preceded by ca. [circa] if approximate), and the name of the institution that houses it (if any), including location. Italicize the titles of paintings and sculptures, but set the titles of photographs in roman type, enclosed in quotation marks.
