History Research: Galileo

Navigating Galileo

Browse by Subject-  Use this when you know what topic you're looking for, but you don't know where to go in Galileo. Its the best place to start.

Browse by Type- This is good if you need a certain type of resource, such as a newspaper article.

Databases A-Z- If you know what database you want, this is the place to be.  Once you get more comfortable with some of the databases you'll probably find yourself here more often.l

Journals A-Z- The ONLY time you should be using this option is if you need an article from a specific journal. Generally this means that you have a citation for an article that you need to track down, which doesn't happen a lot at the undergraduate level.

Search- Search looks like a fun, happy, comfortable place to be. After all, everyone knows how to search these days. It will work in a pinch, but I don't really recommend using this option if you can avoid it. Now if you have something due tomorrow morning, the library is already closed, and you're trying to figure this Galileo thing out, then you can probably give this a shot.

So where do I go now?- Well assuming that you've selected your topic and subtopic in Browse by Subject, you should now be looking at a list of recommended databases. Simply pick one off of the list (If you have no idea whatsoever which one to pick, then see if Research Library and/or Academic Search Complete are on the list and start with one of those) and start your searching there.

Galileo Password

Each USG institution is given a unique password that allows off-campus access to Galileo. This password changes each semester. If you need the Galileo password, there's a link on the Library homepage that requires a login.

Institution ID/Barcode- your 9000 number

Last name- your last name (that was probably pretty obvious, not case sensitive)

PIN- This pin is seperate from any other pin you may have. If you've never seen this login screen before you'll need to enter your 9000 number and last name and click "Get My PIN". The system will email you a 5 digit pin.

JSTOR

JSTOR is a database that you may find very useful and will often be suggested to use, especially when dealing with history. To access JSTOR, go to Databases A-Z in Galileo and it will appear alphabetically under "J". You can also just click on the logo above. Be advised that if you attempt to use JSTOR from off campus, you will be asked to login. The login required will be the same as your student email and the password for it.
